It’s hard to describe how one thinks, and harder still to be understood at a glance.

For me, the closest I can get is to point to the books I read and what I thought of them. Reading is my way of connecting with the world and looking inward, and it shapes my sensitivity.

These are books I’ve read recently that stayed with me.

It confused me from the very beginning. I wasn’t sure how the author wanted me to feel. Should I just pretend there’s no age gap between the main characters? But as the story went on, it got darker. What I loved was the historical background of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was fascinating to read about it from the perspective of people living there at that very moment. Or at least a portrait of that perspective.

The Setting Sun

Read 08/26

I found it at my mum’s place, and from the moment I started reading, I was mesmerised. The descriptions of the surroundings, interiors and nature really caught my attention. Once again, a great historical background, Japan after the war.

Not to mention the edition by Tajfuny (a Polish publishing house). The paper was amazing, a little thicker than in other books I read, but still light and pleasant in the hand. The typography was very, very elegant and light, as if you could blow it away with a breath. And the historical introduction at the start, explaining the context of the novel, was like watching a film, and I’m not joking.

I’ll definitely be buying more from them.

Clarice Lispector
Near to the Wild Heart

I read it with my mouth wide open and a constant feeling that I didn’t really get it, which didn’t make me enjoy it any less. This book is such a great example of proper introspection, and I was there for it. I think it’s so crazy interesting to attempt to describe what is happening within us with language, and that’s what made me love this book so much, and left me in awe of the writer and the main character.

Amy Key
Arrangements in Blue

Read 04/26

A one-of-a-kind book that I wasn’t prepared for. To think so deeply and reflect on one’s life in such a thoughtful and kind way, it must have taken a long time to get to a place like this. I loved the way Amy Key opens up to the reader, and her honesty in writing about building her own life.

I love books like this, because I don’t reach for books just to sit and read alone, but to feel a connection with another person. This one was like a dialogue, even though I didn’t say anything. I got really into the story and the author’s life.

I’m waiting, aggressively impatient, for her next book.

Eliza Kącka
Wczoraj byłaś zła na zielono

Read 05/25

I wasn’t expecting anything when I grabbed this book. I wasn’t sure what the story was about. To be honest, in this case I truly “read the book by its cover”. It’s a cover by Przemek Dębowski, a book designer whose work I look at with such love and admiration.

This story really took its toll on me, touching on very important yet sensitive subjects, such as motherhood and raising a child who is a little different than others. It took me down a beautiful road of courage, love, compassion, and trying to find a common language, even when it seems like there is none.
